College Profile: University of Vermont

I went to law school in Vermont and can attest to the loveliness of the state. It is beautiful in every season, brimming with outdoor activity and fresh air, and the people are wonderful. When considering colleges in the Northeast, it is a place not to be missed. The University of Vermont (UVM), nestled in the vibrant city of Burlington, offers a rich blend of history, traditions, and a dynamic student life. UVM is special in that since the population of Vermont is relatively small, the majority of students come from outside the state, and help create a rich experience for learning. Plus, if you like to ski, there are few places better!

History:

  • Founding and Name: Established in 1791, UVM is among the oldest universities in the United States. The abbreviation "UVM" stands for "Universitas Viridis Montis," Latin for "University of the Green Mountains."

  • Pioneering Inclusivity: UVM was the first American university to declare public support for freedom of religion and the first to admit women and African Americans into Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest honor society.

Traditions:

  • Rally Catamount: The "Catamount" became UVM's mascot in 1928, symbolizing the region's wild cat species. Introduced in 2003, Rally Cat is UVM's spirited mascot, embodying the university's energy and pride.

  • The Outing Club: Founded in 1913, it's the largest student-run club of its kind in the nation, offering activities like kayaking, hiking, and rock climbing.

  • SpringFest: An annual celebration featuring live music and entertainment, bringing together students and the local community.

Student Life and Statistics:

  • Diverse Community: UVM's student body is composed of individuals from various backgrounds, fostering a rich cultural environment. Students come from all over the country and internationally.

  • Active Engagement: With over 250 clubs and organizations, students have ample opportunities to pursue interests ranging from academics to arts and athletics.

  • Greek Life: Approximately 5-10% of male and female students participate in fraternities and sororities, contributing to campus leadership and community service.

If you are looking for a chance to be close to nature, yet still have the fun of a city, then UVM might be a terrific option. Visit the website at https://www.uvm.edu/ to review the programs and schedule an in-person visit.
