College Profile: Gettysburg College

I recently had the chance to visit Gettysburg College and enjoy a tour with other college counselors. It was a gray, rainy day, and yet that did not diminish the charm of this gem of a school. Gettysburg is one of the nation's most historic liberal arts colleges, combining rigorous academics with a campus deeply connected to American history. Located adjacent to the Gettysburg Battlefield in Pennsylvania, the College offers students a distinctive blend of classroom learning, leadership development, research opportunities, and experiential education. Gettysburg's motto - "Do Great Work" - reflects a commitment to preparing students to make meaningful contributions in their communities and careers.

History:

Gettysburg College was founded in 1832 by Lutheran theologian and abolitionist Samuel Simon Schmucker, making it the oldest existing Lutheran college in the United States. Originally known as Pennsylvania College, the institution played a remarkable role during the Civil War. During the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Hall was used as a hospital for wounded Union and Confederate soldiers. Today, students attend classes on a campus that sits just steps from one of the most significant sites in American history. Women were first admitted in 1888, helping pave the way for the coeducational institution it is today.

The College's connection to history extends beyond its location. President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address less than a mile from campus, and the College continues to draw inspiration from his call to civic responsibility and leadership.

Fun Facts:

1. You're Living History Every Day - Few colleges can claim that a major Civil War battle literally took place on and around campus. Students regularly walk through areas that witnessed pivotal moments in American history.

2. Study Abroad Is a Signature Experience - Gettysburg has earned national recognition for study abroad opportunities, with a significant percentage of students participating in international programs during their college careers.

3. Small Classes, Big Opportunities - With an average class size of just 17 students and a 9:1 student-faculty ratio, students work closely with professors and often participate in research projects as undergraduates.

4. The School Mascot Is the Bullets - One of the most unique mascots in college athletics, the Gettysburg Bullets compete in NCAA Division III athletics and the Centennial Conference.

5. Experiential Learning Is Everywhere - More than three-quarters of students complete internships, and many participate in faculty research, leadership positions, independent studies, or community engagement projects before graduation.

Traditions:

First-Year Walks Through History - New students quickly discover that Gettysburg's location is more than a backdrop. Battlefield tours and historical explorations help students connect with the College's unique heritage and sense of place.

The "Do Great Work" Philosophy - Rather than being just a slogan, "Do Great Work" serves as a guiding principle throughout students' academic and extracurricular experiences. The phrase appears throughout campus life and encourages students to pursue meaningful leadership and service opportunities.

Homecoming and Reunion Weekend - Each fall, alumni return to campus for a celebration of Gettysburg traditions, athletic competitions, and community gatherings.

Leadership and Service - With more than 140 student organizations and leadership opportunities, involvement outside the classroom is a major part of the Gettysburg experience. Students are encouraged to lead clubs, participate in community service, and develop skills that extend beyond academics.

I was completely impressed by all of the opportunities available to students. Whether conducting research alongside faculty, studying abroad, interning with organizations, or exploring the battlefield that surrounds campus, Gettysburg students gain experiences that extend far beyond the classroom. The College's commitment to experiential learning and civic engagement helps graduates leave prepared not only for careers, but also for lives of leadership and service.

I spoke with students at various points in their Gettysburg journey and they all talked about what a special experience they have had. If this sounds like a good fit, I encourage you to visit the beautiful campus in person, and check out the website at https://www.gettysburg.edu/
