College Profile: UConn Hartford

I recently spent a few days in Hartford, CT and had the chance to tour UConn Hartford. This campus sits a mere block from the lovely riverfront park area and is walking distance to many great sites and restaurants. There are so many opportunities in this vibrant city available for students. The students were engaged and seemed to really care about the city around them.
Fun Facts & Campus Highlights:
Right in Connecticut’s capital: UConn Hartford is situated downtown and seamlessly integrated with major cultural landmarks, including the Hartford Public Library, Wadsworth Atheneum, Connecticut Science Center, Old State House, and City Hall, all within walking distance of campus.
Historic roots: Classes are held in the iconic Hartford Times Building, a historic Beaux-Arts structure anchoring the campus.
City as your classroom: The campus is uniquely urban. Students engage in experiential learning alongside Hartford’s civic institutions, which is ideal for those passionate about real-world impact.
Federally recognized: UConn Hartford is designated both as an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander–Serving Institution (AANAPISI) and an emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), underscoring its commitment to inclusion and equity.
Historical Snapshot:
Relocation & transformation: UConn Hartford began offering general education courses and student life programming in 1974. In Fall 2017, the campus moved from West Hartford to its current downtown location-marked by the move to the Hartford Times Building-and ushered in a new era of student engagement and growth.
A hub for social and public policy studies: The campus hosts the School of Social Work and School of Public Policy, tapping into Hartford’s political and civic ecosystem.
Campus Traditions & Student Life:
Undergraduate Student Government (USG): Dating back to 1974, USG has evolved from a programming board to a vibrant student governance body. At its peak, it supported over 30 Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), with about one-third of undergrads actively involved.
Rich student offerings: Students can join over 20 clubs and organizations, such as the World Club, Pre-Law Society, or shape campus life through the Associated Student Government.
Cozy communal spots: Hang out at Starbucks, shop for Husky gear at the Barnes & Noble bookstore, or recharge in lounges like OASIS (for veterans), interfaith/reflection rooms, and diversity-focused spaces.
City perks: Take advantage of Husky Bucks downtown, or explore nearby spots like PeoplesBank Arena, Hartford Stage, and the Convention Center.

Over 3,600 students learn in UConn Hartford’s small, inclusive environment.
Specifically, the undergraduate population is 1,600+, while the remaining spans graduate and professional students.
Diversity matters: Approximately 54% of students are from racial and ethnic minority backgrounds.
Faculty & staff support:
Around 125 full-time faculty and staff are dedicated to supporting Hartford students.
Campus leadership, headed by Dr. Mark Overmyer-Velázquez, oversees 3,600 students and about 400 faculty/staff, indicating robust support and academic resources.
Tuition insight: For the 2025–2026 academic year, in-state tuition and fees are approximately $18,252.

Students can begin their education in Hartford and transfer seamlessly to Storrs after completing 54 credits, or finish all four years at Hartford.
