College Profile: The University of Alabama

I spend a lot of time on college campuses and they all have an awesome sense of pride. But few can match the spirit and pride at the University of Alabama, where tradition meets innovation in the heart of Tuscaloosa. There are many reasons why students love joining the Crimson Tide.

History:

  • Founding: UA was established in 1820 and opened to students in 1831, making it the oldest and largest public university in Alabama.

  • Civil War Impact: In 1865, Union troops burned much of the campus, leaving only a few buildings standing.

  • Football Legacy: The university's football program began in 1892, introduced by student William G. Little.

Student Demographics:

  • Total Enrollment (Fall 2024): Approximately 40,846 students.

  • Gender Breakdown: 57.5% female and 42.5% male students.

  • Diversity: The student body comprises 71.5% White, 11.2% Black or African American, 5.53% Hispanic or Latino, 3.3% Two or More Races, and 1.57% Asian students.

Traditions:

  • "Roll Tide": More than a chant, it's a greeting and expression of school spirit among students and alumni.

  • The Million Dollar Band: UA's renowned marching band, known for its electrifying performances at football games.

  • Walk of Champions: Before home games, the football team walks through a sea of fans to Bryant-Denny Stadium, a tradition that ignites school pride.

  • Elephant Stomp: A spirited pep rally featuring the band and cheerleaders, energizing fans before kickoff.

  • "Dixieland Delight": Played during the fourth quarter of home football games, this song unites fans in a campus-wide singalong.

Fun Facts:

  • Academic Excellence: UA has produced 17 Rhodes Scholars, 16 Truman Scholars, 69 Goldwater Scholars, 43 Hollings Scholars, and 20 Boren Scholars.

  • Top-Ranked Programs: The College of Communication and Information Sciences’ public relations program is consistently ranked among the top five in the nation.

  • Motto: "Where Legends Are Made" reflects UA's commitment to fostering leadership and excellence.

Life at the University of Alabama sticks with the students. I have even been to weddings where the Crimson Tide is the theme! From the historic Quad to the lively game-day atmosphere, there's something for everyone. If a large state school in the south sounds like a good fit, then schedule a tour, and make sure to visit the University of Alabama's official website.
