If you are interested in a small, private school in the Mid-Atlantic region, I recently toured a school that might be right up your alley! Nestled in the picturesque town of Chestertown, Maryland, Washington College offers a unique blend of historical significance, cherished traditions, and a close-knit community. The school has a beautiful campus, wonderful facilities and resources, and a vibrant campus life.
History:
Established in 1782, Washington College holds the distinction of being the first college chartered after American independence. General George Washington not only lent his name to the institution but also contributed 50 guineas towards its founding and served on its Board of Visitors and Governors. The college's origins trace back to the Kent County Free School, and it has since evolved into a respected liberal arts institution.
Traditions:
George Washington’s Birthday Ball: An annual formal event celebrating the college's namesake, featuring themed decorations, music, and dancing. Past themes have included "The Great Gatsby" and "Harry Potter."
War on the Shore: A highly anticipated lacrosse match between Washington College and Salisbury University, drawing enthusiastic crowds and showcasing school spirit.
Sophie Kerr Prize: Awarded annually to a graduating senior demonstrating exceptional literary talent, this prize is the largest undergraduate literary award in the nation.
May Day: Celebrated on the night of April 30th, students partake in a unique tradition involving a campus run, reflecting the college's vibrant student life.
Student Snapshot:
As of Fall 2023, Washington College had an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 916 students, maintaining a rural campus setting spanning 112 acres. The student body is diverse, with 42% from Maryland, 56% from other states, and 2% international students. The college offers 34 majors and 35 minors, with popular fields including Business Administration, Psychology, Biology, Economics, English, and Political Science.
Campus Life and Community:
Located in Chestertown, a charming town filled with cute restaurants and quaint shops, Washington College provides a serene environment conducive to learning and personal growth. The campus features historic buildings like Middle, East, and West Halls, which date back to the mid-19th century and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Students can engage in various extracurricular activities, research opportunities, and community events, fostering a well-rounded college experience.
I was impressed by all this school had to offer. It was a small school that felt a lot larger due to the abundance of opportunity. Visit in person, and check out the website at: https://www.washcoll.edu/.
