The University of Southern California (USC) is rich in history, traditions, and academic excellence. I had no idea what to expect when I visited recently. All I knew about USC is it has a reputation as a great school, it seems quite large for a private school, and a lot of people in Hollywood either went there or want to send their kids there. I am so glad I visited in person because the university exceeded all of my expectations and offers endless opportunities for its students at the highest level. I enjoyed the pure joy and spirit exhibited by the students on campus. There is boundless Trojan pride! I also noticed that despite its larger size, it has an intimate feel and students are extremely engaged.
1. Rich History:
Founded in 1880, USC is the oldest private research university in California. It has played a key role in shaping Los Angeles and fostering creative industries, particularly in cinema, technology, and medicine.
2. Iconic Traditions:
Tommy Trojan: The central campus statue represents school pride and is a popular spot for photos.
The Victory Bell: The bell is exchanged between USC and UCLA depending on the winner of their annual football game. The Victory Bell is one of the most intense college rivalries.
“Conquest” is an annual rally before the big game against rival UCLA.
The "Trojan Marching Band" performs at every football game, and students love participating in the "Spirit of Troy."
3. Fun Facts:
Mascot: Traveler, a majestic white horse, is USC's beloved mascot.
Fight On!: USC's fight song and the "V for Victory" sign (holding two fingers up) are part of Trojan pride.
Alumni: Notable alumni include astronaut Neil Armstrong and filmmaker George Lucas.
4. Students and Campus:
Student Body: USC is home to over 48,000 students (including graduate students), with a diverse representation from all 50 states and over 150 countries.
Campus Size: USC's campus spans 226 acres in Los Angeles, boasting beautiful architecture.
USC offers a rich array of opportunities and an incredibly vibrant student life. I urge you to visit in person, if you can, to get a true sense of the exciting campus. Check out https://www.usc.edu to learn more about the school and all of the programs offered.
