College Profile: Florida State University

Going to high school in Florida, I visited Florida State University (FSU) many times and know countless students who have attended. Those students count their time at FSU as their favorite years and I have seen them start to send their own kids there. Located in Tallahassee, Florida, FSU is renowned for its rich history, vibrant traditions, and diverse student body. If you are looking for a larger school with a beautiful campus in a warm climate, then FSU might be one to consider.

History:

Established in 1851, FSU is one of Florida's oldest institutions of higher learning. The university's origins trace back to the establishment of the State Seminary West of the Suwannee River, with the first Board of Education meeting held on February 7, 1857. Francis Eppes, the grandson of Thomas Jefferson, served as the president of the seminary's Board of Education for eight years, instilling Jeffersonian ideals that continue to influence the university today.

Traditions:

  • Garnet and Gold: The university's official colors, proudly displayed during athletic events and campus celebrations.

  • Marching Chiefs: FSU's renowned marching band, known for their dynamic performances at football games and other university events.

  • Alma Mater: Composed by Charlie Carter in 1956, the alma mater, "High O'er Towering Pines," is a song that resonates with the FSU community.

  • Fight Song: The "FSU Fight Song" energizes the crowd and players during sporting events, embodying the spirit of the university.

  • Hymn to the Garnet and Gold: A cherished song that reflects the pride and tradition of FSU.

Fun Facts:

  • Streaking Origin: In the 1970s, FSU was purportedly the birthplace of the streaking fad, with the first instances observed on Landis Green.

  • Berkeley of the South: During the 1960s and 1970s, FSU earned this nickname due to its vibrant student activism, particularly in areas like racial integration, women's rights, and opposition to the Vietnam War.

Dynamic Student Body:

FSU boasts a diverse student population and offers various living–learning communities, providing students with opportunities to engage deeply in their academic and extracurricular interests.

FSU offers excellent academics and an environment full of school spirit. I encourage you to browse the website at https://www.fsu.edu/ and try to schedule a visit in person to see for yourself!
