I recently had the chance to spend a day at Denison University in Ohio and I was so impressed by all that the school offers. It’s a beautiful, vibrant community with engaged students and so many opportunities. Here are some of the reasons why you might want to pursue your studies “on the Hill.”
History:
Denison University was founded in 1831 (originally called the Granville Literary and Theological Institution) in Granville, Ohio.
It is among the earliest colleges established in the Northwest Territory (beyond the Allegheny Mountains and north of the Ohio River).
In the mid-1850s, the institution was renamed “Denison University” in honor of a key benefactor.
Over time, Denison evolved from its theological and classical roots into a residential liberal arts college that emphasizes undergraduate education and a broad curriculum.
Fun Facts & School Traditions:
The “Denison Day” (often called D-Day) is a big outdoor concert event held on campus, featuring major musical acts and bringing the community together.
“Aestavalia” is a spring celebration: students dance outdoors, enjoy bouncy houses, carnival rides, and games; embracing the “fun on the Hill” spirit.
The tradition known as the “Senior Sunrise” is when seniors, on the final morning of their college experience, gather to watch the sunrise together, marking the transition to Commencement.
The “The Scream” is a late-night ritual during finals week when students pour out of their residence halls at midnight and share a collective scream; quite a release.
Animals roam campus: yes, you’ll see deer around; part of the natural beauty of the setting.
The alma mater “To Denison” (lyrics by V E Field ’03) is sung at many official events: First-Year Induction, Commencement, Alumni Reunion Convocation.
Student Life & Statistics:
The undergraduate population is approximately 2,400 students.
Student-faculty ratio is about 9:1, which leades to smaller classes and close interaction with professors.
Denison offers 65+ academic programs (majors).
Nearly 30% of students participate in varsity athletics.
Denison fields 26 varsity teams, and supports 45+ club & intramural sports.
Alumni network: Over 37,000 alumni worldwide.
Why It Might Be a Great Fit:
Small-scale, close-community environment: With 2,400 undergrads and a 9:1 ratio, you’re likely to be known by professors and peers.
Vibrant campus traditions that go beyond classes: big events, community rituals, and opportunities for connection.
Strong liberal arts foundation: With 65+ programs, many extracurriculars, and a strong residential experience.
Active athletics and student involvement: Whether varsity sports, clubs, intramurals, or arts, you’ll find ways to engage.
Beautiful setting: A residential campus in Granville, Ohio, with nature, tradition, and community.
I was impressed by how much the school prepares students for life after college, helping them gain practical experience through internships, study abroad, and research opportunities. The students all seem to really enjoy their time at the university and show a lot of school spirit.
If Denison seems like a good option, I encourage you to take a tour in person and visit their website at https://denison.edu/.
